Polish Armoured Car ‘Kubuś’ was built during Warsaw Uprising, betwen 10th and 20th August 1944. Vehicle was constructed in Stanisław Kwiatkowski’s (”Stach”) car workshop located on the corner of Tamka and Topiel streets in the Powiśle district of the Warsaw.
Basis for this construction was Chevrolet 157 truck. With use of doubled steel plates welded on the frame car received its armour. “Kubuś” could carry 8 to 12 soldiers equipped with 1-2 machine guns, flamethrower, machine pistols and side weapons.
“Kubuś” was assigned to the Motorized Company “Wydra” and participated in two unsuccessful attacks on Warsaw University campus. During second attack vehicle was slightly damaged (i.e. hit tyres) and was not repaired. “Kubuś” was left behind on September 6th when Polish Home Army troops retreating from Powiśle district. Vehicles could not be evacuated and were sabotaged to avoid their use by Germans.
“Kubuś” was found in Okólnik garden, where resistance fighters left it in September. In Autumn 1945 vehicle was transported to the Polish Military Museum and registered under 55688 Inventory Number. All photos were made on June 11th, 2007.
